It doesn't matter what day of the week it is, how long your child napped that afternoon, or when your last vacation was, getting through the day with a homemade dinner on the table is no small feat when you are navigating toddler world. Why is it that getting through the myriad of planned and unplanned events of the day makes getting dinner on the table so difficult? For starters, toddler world is busy and it takes a tremendous amount of energy to sustain and plan for the day-to-day (whether you are a working parent or stay at home). Secondly, toddler world can be surprisingly unpredictable even when you strive to keep a regular schedule. Children get sick and playdates get canceled making flexibility an important part of parenting a toddler.
Here are some strategies for navigating toddler world in the hopes of getting a homemade dinner on the table at least a few nights each week:
We all have our days when things fall apart and on those occasions simply call it a wash; order take out or pull out a frozen meal from the freezer. The bigger picture should include mealtime conversation that allows the chance for family members to catch up on the day's events, learn about each other's lives, and model good communication skills for our children. No matter how hard it is to get dinner on the table, it is important to carve out mealtime together as a family. The time you spend with your toddler during mealtime is just as important as what you put on the table for them to eat.
