I have always been a morning person. Sleeping past 7:30 am was considered late even before having kids, which is why I am always up for an early morning adventure. Before kids it was all about the early morning run or long walk with the dog and now that my youngest is almost twenty months old I am enjoying these summer weekends of planning a morning outing at the last minute. This week it was a trip to a local sunflower maze!
Living in Connecticut we are lucky to be surrounded by many working farms. Visiting various local farms provides an opportunity to learn about local agriculture and farming lifestyle. This summer we joined a local CSA and the boys have benefited from our weekly visits for pick up as well as the opportunity to actively pick portions of our vegetable collection each week. This morning's excursion was purely about getting outside, enjoying some beautiful summer weather, and and opportunity for a little teamwork.
When it comes to summer I am not one to sit the boys down with workbooks or log specific hours of reading. Sure we take time to read aloud every day (mostly at bedtime but also in the afternoon for a little quiet time), but I enjoy finding ways for the boys to practice their literacy skills in a functional way. This morning was a great situation not only to promote teamwork but also to encourage the boys to use their reading skills to navigate the sunflower maze independently...or better yet, to guide the whole family through the maze. They took turns reading, sometimes one reading the question while the other read the multiple choice answers. It was incredibly powerful and exciting to watch their enthusiasm for accomplishing so much independently.
Weekend time is sacred in our house given that our time to be together as a whole family is limited during the week. I prefer to have a flexible schedule and to make last minute plans, which for some reason always works out better than when we try to plan out something in advance. The past two weeks have been packed with travel for a family wedding and recovery from tonsil and adenoid surgery for one kiddo making the chance to take in some beautiful summer weather and the magic of sunflowers all the more perfect. It is hard to believe the boys will head back to school in just three weeks and that we will be ruled by the craziness of getting up and out the door in the morning. The boys are already planning for a trip back to this farm for their corn maze, while I am still trying to figure out how to slow time...
